If Heaven is real, awesome, i'm a good Christian, if it isn't, oh well. On the other hand, if Hell is real and you're atheist, sucks to be you, and if it isn't, oh well. No negatives to being Christian, but I respect the views of Atheists.

what is Muslims were right, what if the Greeks were right, what if the other 7000 gods were right?
User avatar #255 to #239 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
Also if the Jewish God was right everyone gets heaven... so ya, hedge your bets there!

It's closer to 3000.

Then sucks to be me I suppose, but at least I have a 1/7000 chance, as opposed to 0. :)

well lets say that their is a god who didnt reveal him self who likes people who don't choose a fake god to worship instead of him

why couldn't the big bang be the vehicle for creation via the natural laws of the universe...?
User avatar #223 to #188 - toosexyforyou (07/22/2012) [-]
You're fucking kidding me right? It could be that after death, only Christians go to hell and Atheists are rewarded and have the most comfortable spots in heaven. Wanna know the real bad part about being a Christian? Being this fucking stupid right here^
User avatar #242 to #223 - redJericho (07/22/2012) [-]
Wait wait wait... Your argument is that the atheists, who do not believe in Heaven, will be the ones rewarded in Heaven?......and you called ME stupid?
User avatar #259 to #242 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
technically his view has the same value as yours. He's just hedging his bets in a God that favours atheists...
User avatar #286 to #259 - redJericho (07/22/2012) [-]
For some reason, I find it unlikely that a God would reward somebody for Not believing in Him. Your argument is fair though, you get a +1.

Prove it.
User avatar #217 to #213 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
it's a wager. There's no proof, it's just a bet...

If your faith is entirely based on trying to beat the odds that's one insincere faith xD

what are your thoughts on my comment, sir?
User avatar #201 to #188 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
BTW Pascal's Wager is one of the shittiest defenses for religion ever made... Philosophers love to make fun of it.

Though it's not as bad as Descartes' defense for god. Everything that exists has a form. The essence of the object. A perfect circle for instance. That perfect circle can only exist in thought because reality cannot allow for a surface with no edges.

When one tries to imagine the form of God they must imagine perfection. Perfection necessitates existence, therefore God exists. Now you may think this could justify saying that the perfect circle exists but the form of the circle does not require existence. The form of God does.

It's a stupid theory because it's just a medley of assumptions. Assuming perfection necessitates existence, assuming the imagined form of God is the real form of God. etc. etc.

You have a right to believe that, and I have a right to believe otherwise. I don't see the things I do as a "sacrifice". There is no sense arguing over something that has no true answer, so let's not.
User avatar #251 to #238 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
just remember, a faith based on trying to beat the odds is incredibly insincere. You'd do well to read up on more positively received philosophies xD
User avatar #320 to #251 - redJericho (07/22/2012) [-]
I agree, but Pascal's Wager is not the sole reason I'm Christian, not even a major part. I love going to Church every Sunday and meeting the genuinely nice folk, donating a few bucks so we can, as a group, clean up some run-down houses, but in the end, Heaven is why I'm Christian. Even if it isn't real; to look forward to something that amazing is one heck of an incentive to be a good person. And if I believe in Heaven, why not believe in Pascal's Wager as well? If anything it strengthens my Faith, it teches me that there is no sense doubting God or Heaven because the alternative is fear of Hell.

Here I go, arguing like I said I wouldn't, i'm done, you can have the last word.
User avatar #326 to #320 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
someone appears to have thumbed down all my comments... pity...

Just remember, no one will ever look fondly on Pascal's Wager... You can like it all you want... but in any discussion of religious faith and where you derive it from... if you use that Wager as a way to strengthen your faith you'll just get raped by all the philosophy majors in the group xD
User avatar #368 to #326 - redJericho (07/22/2012) [-]
Haha, same here, nobody really seems to get thumbs in these religious flame threads.

I'll think of your suggestion if I'm ever in that situation :)
User avatar #268 to #251 - ZenMacros (07/22/2012) [-]
I agree wholeheartedly. Pascal's Wager blows dick. You can't force your own beliefs, and a loving God would never want his children to hold their beliefs based on fear.
User avatar #363 to #268 - redJericho (07/22/2012) [-]
A God-fearing Christian is considered a good Christian. If we didn't fear Hell, what reason would we have to go to Church or pursue Heaven when there is no alternative?
If you're a good Christian, then there is no reason to have true fear, only a reason to continue doing what you are doing.
User avatar #372 to #363 - ZenMacros (07/22/2012) [-]
Need reason? How about just because it's a good thing to do? You're basically telling me that the only reason to even wanna do good things is because you might be punished for not doing them. What a selfish way to live.

Waaaaait a second. Hold up there, bub.
1) What do you mean, we can't explain it. High school teachers can explain it. CHILDREN can explain it. There are VIDEO GAMES about it.
2) "Ever since evolution has been thought of mankind still hasn't been able to do it ourselves therefore there has to be a divine being." We've evolved a LOT since cavemen. I'm not covered in thick, wiry, pubic-like hair, have an IQ of 124, and have the fine motor skills to type. Every generation (up until this last couple, wtf is going on) has had an increase of 20 IQ points on average. That's evolution. It's happening.
User avatar #232 to #206 - letsdothisthing (07/22/2012) [-]
I apologize, my statement was indeed incorrect. I do not know why i mistook the word evolution with the big band. What I meant to say was atheist can not explain the big bang anymore than Christians can explain God. Sorry I have no clue why I mixed those two things up.
User avatar #402 to #232 - froggoddess (07/22/2012) [-]
Well then, your statement makes much more sense, and I apologize to you if I attacked too harshly.

...have there only been like 4 generations? Average IQ is like 105 or something... 20 points per generation?
User avatar #192 to #188 - Sethorein ONLINE (07/22/2012) [-]
except for the fact that there are hundreds of different religions that tell you that you'll go to hell if you aren't their religion...

Also you make it seem as if there are no sacrifices involved in being religious... there are plenty of logical issues that you just have to live with in order to keep your faith...
