Not to cause a shitstorm or to feed any existing ones but I think I have an answer to that. The first 5 books of the bible were written by I think it was Moses. The Gospel of John was written thousands of years later at which point much of the old testament was under scrutiny by the secularist romans (except for the laws written in the first covenant). So John wouldn't have known if Moses had seen the face of God

well John was a fisherman, and it's no secret that fishermen of that era were generally uneducated so chances are he wasn't very well versed in the Torah. Also, at that point the "bible" as we know it didn't exist, there was only the Torah which is the equivalent to the old testament to the Chrisitans and the equivalent of the bible to the Jewish faith, and as I mentioned before many of the writings apart from the laws were under secular attack. But that was almost 2000 years ago so for all we know you could be right
