England isn't a country, it doesn't even have it's own parliament. The United Kingdom is a country, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are "states" that it's made up of.

All four countries have the one passport and are ruled by the one parliament and have the one head of state.
Ergo that is Great Britain.

You are right in some ways however as the Empire did Decline rapidly after the Second World War due to the tremendous cost to maintain and rise in human rights. only those parts of the Empire that Chose to stay under the British rule did stay, including the Falklands Islands (they wanted to stay in the British Empire as the Argentinians Would invade if the British left (they tried anyway and failed (they are likely to try again soon)))

The Commonwealth is a group of 54 states that used to be part of the British Empire (apart from 2 states), who want to promote democracy, human rights, free trade etc but not be ruled by the British Government, they do however, Recognise the Queen as the head of state, an example would be Canada, the Commonwealth have their own "mini-Olympics" known as the Commonwealth games, where only the Commonwealth can take part

Monarchy is one of Britains major sources of wealth. Very few other countries actually have a monarchy, which is why many visit the UK to see the royal buildings etc. Also, every monarch since King George the III (or IV, I can;t remember which king to be exact) has given up the profits from all of the land that the royal family owns, meaning the money flows directly into the British government. In return, the royal family recieves a smaller sum of money each year to live off.
TL;DR, the monarchy actually brings in a lot of money to the British economy.
