Ironically the magnets inside of a hard drive are more powerful than the average magnet. It takes pro-longed exposure for an outside magnet to damage the hard drive.

High powered? No!!! Any magnet will do, but avoid prolonged exposure as magnets fuck up your hard-drive :)

Try using a pulley system. Either a simple weight to pull yourself up to that cavity or a electric motor to pull yourself up at a steady pace. And don't forget to reinforce the roof of the room / floor of that of that compartment, it will need to take your weight.
