As an English major I find this characterization of the language appalling. Do people truly believe that they can take a sound from any word and claim that the rules of those words apply to all other words? Yes, English has a lot of rules, but it is because of those rules that we are able to have very diverse aspects of our language.

Here is an Electabuzz as an apology for the rant.

the English Language,
where you fill in a form by filling it out
where you take a dump by leaving one
where your alarm goes off by going on
where something can burn down while burning up
where "phonetic" isnt spelt phonetically
where you recite a play and play at a recital
where your nose runs and your feet smell
where you ship by truck but send cargo by ship

AND, since all those sounds can technically be silent such as GH in through, the last o in onomatopoeia, t as in ballet and i as in business, GHOTI is also silent :D

Plural of goose is geese. Plural of moose is not meese. English language strikes again confusing the hell out of people.

It can also be pronounced silently.
GH though
  0 people
  T ballet
   I business

I know at least one person below has posted this, but this came from my own brain.

many of the European languages borrowed from Latin, so one would assume English would do the same. But it doesn't, English just mugs other languages and takes random words and syllables out of their pockets

Simple rules of the English language that you just broke:
The "GH" sound is always at the end of a word like: enough, tough, rough, so in this case it would sound like a normal g sound.
In the "O" case, it's a matter of accent, so you can't really fix it.
But the "TI" case is only in the middle of the word. Nation, ration, vacation.

This logic is kinda fucked...

gh pronounced as "f" only at the end of a word. I pronounce women with a hard "o" (may just be my because of where I live) and ti with a "sh" sound is only at the end of a word used with tion

**cookiie rolled a random image posted in comment #6508379 at FJ Pony Thread **

Yeah .... but no ..... gh in enough/cough etc., is pronounced that way because of the OU before. (Remember GHOST, GHASTLY) However, l do not know anything about the O and TI ..... so ..... GHOTI = GHISH
