It's because German uses 'Kasus' (grammatical cases, i.e. Nominativ, Akkusativ, Genetiv and Dativ), depending on which function the word serves in a sentence. Different function means different case. (e.g. You as subject is 'du' (Nominativ), you as object is 'dich' (Akkusativ), although this is very simplified). I am not German myself, so native speakers are free to correct me at all times :)

Yeah there are different words for you, me, them, etc. It's accusative, dative, genitive, and nominative case.

Nominative: YOU are good = Du bist gut.
Accusative: I love YOU = Ich liebe dich.
Dative: I bought YOU a dog = Ich kaufe dir ein Hund.

You don't need to worry about genitive though.

German grammar is hard. And they're real grammar nazis.

Well... Lieder is slightly different from song... it's a bit of a difficult distinction to make. I was talking about classical music.

I actually find that the language itself is beautiful... The only thing that makes it sound "harsh" as people think it is is the diction which is associated with it (shouting).

You don't want to say that to your mother. Ich liebe dich is basically saying "I want to sleep with you." Say Ich hab dich lieb. It's the non sexual way. And it sounds more angry.

"ich liebe dich" is actually the phrase you would say to your girlfriend/boyfriend or very young children say to their parents. for everything else there is "ich hab dich lieb"
