Bro I would totally agree with you, don't get me wrong, but this just can't happen. It's all about greed. It's a common instinct in human nature. We're never quite satisfied with that we have, you know? I support funding Military, but at the same time, I think the government needs to do more about the school as well. I just graduated high school and I agree with what you said. How in the hell does the federal government get the idea that paying more money will make students care. The test scores are more of a reflection on the students' attitudes towards school than their actual intelligence. Case and point, my class great standardized testing scores compared to other schools and past classes because they told us that if we didn't "meet the standard" (get an 80) we couldn't graduate. Everyone passed and some of the people in my class are...lets just say not the smartest on the planet.
TLDR: Scores suck because students don't care, spending billions isn't dong shit

For alot of schools the football team makes the most money for them so they try to give them the most support so i can understand that but the whole "anything but books and actual education" I agree with. My school put in a ton of new security cameras at the end of the year, meanwhile students are providing their own loose leaf paper and having to do all the research for assignments online because there aren't enough books. It's pathetic

What are you even talking about? I think you're not looking at the situation in the right perspective. Okay let me give you an example. Lets say youre the US and im Iraq and you want my oil. If you knew that i had no dangerous weapons such as a nuke, you could just march right in and take over my country, right? If i had a nuke however, things would be different. You could simply just march right in anymore. If a country had a nuke, they'd use it to threaten countries that try to question their power and sovereignty or w/e. Do you understand what im saying?

in your hypothetical situation iraq has one nuke. also, if they had multiple nukes and we didn't use any on them they would be unlikely to escalate it by using nukes on america. if they did, NATO would destroy them and america would use nukes too.

So if taking 3/4 the resources that the USAF gets isn't enough, what do you want to do? Completely stop military funding? With all the things going on across the seas in Iran, Syria, North Korea among others, that is just plain silly. You can't just cut out the defense budget because it costs a lot, the whole economy needs to be reformed.

Also the education in this country up until high school, if not college is complete bullshit. I was born in Russia and went to school there until I was 11 years old. When I moved to the US I learned absolutely nothing in school for 3 years because that's how far behind schools are here. Everyone just keeps babysitting kids up until they're pretty much adults. Maybe if we cut all the garbage out of schools we wouldn't have that much trouble funding them either.

Um, what the actual fuck are those places gonna do to us? I mean Syria can barely control itself, never mind constitute a cohesive threat. Ok, but even with ONE nuclear submarine, we could take them out. Believe me, my dad worked on some of them. We don't need to worry. The post isn't suggesting getting rid of the military as much as switching spending rates, which is overkill, but it makes a good point.

As I already said. The USAF already cut 3/4 of the people it had from 10 years ago. We have people doing 12 hour shifts, 6 day weeks, for the same annual pay we had before. What else do you want us to do?

The crumbling education system has to do with non-transparent structure. Refer to http://www2.ed.gov/policy/elsec/leg/esea02/pg1.html#sec101 or any part of No Child Left Behind and tell me you don't see money flowing down the drain onto an ungrateful majority people that use a flawed system as they please. If you want your schools to run, run them properly, distribute properly, use resources properly. Don't project issues.

I still remember my favorite teacher from back in high school, Mr. Glass. He taught physics better than anyone I've ever seen. He also refused to take part in the "no child gets left behind" making it clear at the start of the year that no matter what you do, if you can't pass his tests, you aren't passing his class since you obviously wouldn't know the material. At the end of the year the lowest grade anyone out of my class got on the regents (NYS standardized test for major high school subjects) was a 90, so we definitely learned the material. Unfortunately the board of ed are assholes and forced this great teacher to retire the year after I had him. So that's basically how our public education is.

Costa Rica isn't one of the major world powers either. Small countries can do that because either nobody cares about what they have, or if they did get invaded UN and NATO would come to their aid.

Actually, North Korean missiles are extremely capable of reaching our shores by no later than 2015, following their weapon trends. Their Scud C's and Nodong's are able to devastate an unfunded Okinawan base already. Our positioning and further weapon advancement is not to have big shiny toys, but to stay relevant and preemptive.
