First off it was cool to see the Jets emblem (now i get negative thumbs for being a football fan)

Second, football is called football because the ball we use in the sport is about a foot long, while i agree that soccer being football makes more sense.

Third stop being unfair about how you treat sports, if its ok to post about Soccer, then let people post about Football. Everytime i say ANYTHING about the NFL people jump to "Stupid fat americans and their stupid sports."

Football is actually fun and requires skill to play, like every sport in the world, so stop trying to judge it before you play it. I used to judge hockey before i acutally watched it.

Also we don't riot when our team loses a game, thats just stupid.

And my closing argument is that as a football player, respect that beside rugby, this sport is probably one of the most

That sport should just be called "american rugby"...

Does absolutely no one know that the term "soccer" developed from British slang for association football? Americans simply latched on to the term because they already associated the word "football" with American Football.

>MFW half of Europe shits bricks over a term they themselves invented.

so where does Rugby come from? exactly. football comes from the ball being approximately a foot long, originally.

A town in England called Rugby, where they first played Rugby.

Its a ball, its a foot long, its a football.

I guess your argument was based on the fact that cricket involves so many crickets.

Everyone else is just jealous that America is one of the greatest trolls, taking football and calling it soccer whilst calling our sport football when only hands are used, causing the world to be angry and shit .

Football was called football not because of the limb you use most often in the ball's handling, but because the ball is a foot long. Englishmen can blame themselves for American calling football soccer, due to the fact they came up with the nickname to help distinguish soccer from rugby.

<< Pic somewhat related.

Football is so named because it is played on 'Foot.' This is in contrast with the sports of Noblemen that are played on horse, like Polo. Therefore, in Ye Olde England (really Victorian England, but I love Ye Olde), all games of the commoners, without horses, were called Football. Games of the noblemen, on horses, were not. Football's name is anachronistic, yes, but it evolved from the sport of "getting a ball across a certain distance while running" (be it kicking or grabbing or tackling or throwing) that turned into Soccer, Rugby, American Football, etc.

You just got History'd.

Are we still arguing about how other nations call their sport?

Americans call American Football "football" because of the length of the ball. They also call Association Football "soccer" the same way the British have done before the sport was renamed (aSOCCiation = Soccer) in Europe and other regions of the globe.

Since we're being technical, it's TOTALLY SMART to call potato chips "crisps" and insult the original creator of the product, the United States, because they say it differently, right?
