It certainly wouldn't go like this would it? I mean, the small mammal increasing in size and whatnot makes some amount of sense, but for what means of survival would an animal, not only go from a carnivore to a herbivore, but lose all of it's defensive means as well?

maybe it´s prey wandered off/became extinct so it had to find a new source of food(->plants)
Also if there´s a lack of food, being huge isn´t helping you(more weight->needs more food)so it became smaller.
And if there´s nothing to hunt them, they don´t need defensive means->they lose them
