I think it has to do with the way that the electronic music community has a strong hipster mindset. With Skrillex's popularity, they find reasons to dislike him.

Not all lectroheads are hipsters... This is just my interpretation.

I'm an electro house nut (wolfgang, deadmau5, shm, kaskade, etc) and I used to love skrillex. Once I discovered kaskade I realized skrillex sucks ass. You can like his music and all, I don't care how popular he is. His music is less of "let's make an artistic, thoughtful, unique song with a real great beat" and more along the lines of, "let's crank up the bass to max, slam those knobs around on my MIDI controller, put the most random noise with the most extreme settings in Ableton, and sell it off as a song". What I hate about dubstep is the lack of structure. Kaskade and Skrillex made "lick it" which is epic because it's wild yet toned down, and structured with multiple elements. All dubstep today is nothing but DJ SO FUNKYYYYYYYYAAAHHH BWAAAAGGHHH WUWUWUWUWUWUWUWUWUHNGGGGGGGG for 4-5 minutes. I can appreciate the sound if it's thought out and designed to sound good, and used as an element to a song, but having a few instruments and an over the top wobble bass seems to be nothing but a bastardization of electronic music.

I listen to skrillex like I listen to any popular artist: in small doses. Like salt, he can give my meal of artists like rusko, grum, and ratatat a little more flavor. But too much is bad.

Same thing with my rap and rock playlists.

I hear you man, if other people like him (like you) cool, but I don't think anyone can really say he's a god of anything. The only god of dubstep is Burial.

Oh man, it's old dubstep though, before it became all grindy with the wobble bass. Burial is back from when dubstep was in it's purest form, ambient and bassy with smooth melodies, actually kind of jazzy in some respects, but creamy smooth. That's another reason I can't stand skrillex. Burial is one of the greatest dubstep artists to ever live, and in the interview for his BBC 1 essential mix he says burial isn't even dubstep... like he knows

It's really debated if he's dubstep, because he also sounds a bit like garage as well as percussion kinda like daft punk, but before skrillex and shit, this is what dubstep sounded like (some had light wobble basses in the background, but burial influenced a lot of dubstep artists)

Late reply I know, but I wanted to say that I listened to a bunch of his stuff and it's really beautiful. I wasn't super into lectro but now I'm a pretty big fan.

And it's fine that you think that, I disagree, but I never judge another man's music. I enjoy dubstep because it's very upbeat, and the bass in them just blows me away. Another large reason is I'm a brony and I enjoy listening to the fan music, so it may have just grown on me. Do you like the newer electronica such as Deadmau5?

There are many sub-genres of dubstep, Skrillex is metal core, and among that he is arguably one of the best. You don't appreciate his style/genre of music, fine. No one gives a shit. I don't like country, but I don't post "hurr durr I like pick up trucks - Toby Keith". What exactly do you consider good dubstep if you indeed like it?

No one is the best artist around. That is only opinion. He technically isn't dubstep because of the samples and time he uses but people get into a massive shitstorm about it.

I think he means the tempo of the songs. Dubstep is usually about 140 BPM.
