I'm for gay rights and gay marriage. But considering that marriage is considered a religious thing states should give civil unions the same benefits of marriage so technically you aren't married yet you still can get all the benefits. But people would still be butthurt over it for some reason.

Not all of us are religious. people want to call it a marriage not a civil union it's not really that big of a deal but for some reason it is not accepted which I think stupid.

I know that. I'd like to call it marriage too but that then keeps the door open for religion to step in. I'm all for anything that prevents anybody's rights from being restricted.

I understand what you mean. Personally I believe religious people who take offense to the word marriage being used to describe a gay couple are idiots, I mean it's just a word, if your marriage is not as special because John and Sam or Sally and Emily can get married then you should take a closer look at your own because if it is not special anymore then I don't think your marriage was that good in the first place.
