Guitarist here, that's pretty much equally as horrifying. Fingerplaying would be fucked, and would completely throw off my picking balance.

I mostly play metal and hard rock, and got a furiously hard grip on my pick (har di har har), and use my ring finger as a stabilizer for my thumb.

Ring finger = mas importante

Oh yeah, I'm a serious metal player, but variety never hurts. I love playing elongated, melodic solo basslines. Nothing worse than just striking root notes as if you only exist because you have to.
