While yes, it's clear that he had mental health issues, you've also got to look at how close Brandon and Clare were. They were essentially brother and sister for the majority of their childhood. Clare was much more extroverted in school, while Brandon was much more introverted. He relied on her friendship too deeply and it ended up hindering him later in life. Introverts need their close friends to help them come out of their shells. Clare either did not care or did not realize how much Brandon cared about her. The fault here is not with Brandon, it's with the screwed up social situations that pop up so often in this generation.

Brandon's suicide was in no way set in stone 8 years before the event. That's BS that the fucked up social situation locked him into that position. He had a choice and he chose to cling on to her when she put him in the enemy-zone, and that choice is significant of a problem with mental health. This kid had four friends and none of them saw that his attachment to Clare was an issue nor did they tell anyone about Clare's horrid bullying? Why didn't the family get involved? He said Brandon's Mom and Clare's Mom were great friends and yet neither of them knew of the shit that went on in between them? The school didn't know about any of this?

You say he's introverted and she's extroverted and her bullying put him in a position where I guess suicide is some kind of a meritable choice, but it isn't the social situation and it isn't Clare who made this inevitable. It was the bystanders and it pretty much is always the bystanders. When Brandon is experiencing serious mental health problems and lacks the ability to act out against Clare, someone needs to come to his side and no one did.

Brandon had problems, clearly both internally in his mind and externally with Clare. No one gave him a solution. Do not blame Clare because the bystanders let Clare run rampant for eight years and in turn they are just as bad as she is.

If you want to take something away from that story it's don't let this shit happen. Hate Clare, feel bad for Brandon, but in reality don't be a passive bystander.

The bystanders didn't know what was going on. He was introverted, as I said, and he internalized. He even pretended to go to prom to avoid his parents' scrutiny. She could've saved his life, but ended up being the cause for his death.
