And John Frusciante (before he left) was a damn good guitar player, and the lyrics are often poetic so it really draws me in.

I've always enjoyed their lyrics, especially on their older albums. It's always either deep or amusing. I had a cousin who starred in one of their music videos once. I guess Anthony sponsored her little soccer team or somethin like that.

Well, I like how they change over time. My personal favorite album is B.S.S.M. It seems almost like they get.. calmer over time. I don't know how to explain it.

Actually, there's a difference between 'music' and beat/rhythm/sound. What you're talking about is the latter. I'll admit, there's a hell of a lot of rap songs that sound fuckin' AMAZING, but the second the lyrics come on, the song is ruined.
Music, on the other hand, is written from the heart about MEANINGFUL shit, and while there is not set definition for 'meaningful', not many people can relate to having millions of dollars, hoes and 50 cars, which is why 'lil wayne' and his faggot brigade are passing fads in comparison to artists such as Jimmy Hendrix.

The whole POINT behind music is about it speaking to you. I mean music is music, but a lot of the picture is what it's saying. If the lyrics are meaningless and shallow, then so is the music.

Exactly, that's why I rarely listen to the radio, especially if a song I like is popular at the moment.
Might sound funny, but that's one of the reasons that I enjoy Atmosphere, because he tries his hardest not to allow his music to go mainstream (no radio, commercials, or samples), that and the fact that his lyrics are amazing and inspirational.
