In Iraq, I knew a guy just like that.
He kept like 30 mags loaded and ready whenever we went out. Of course, the guy was 6'7 and weighed almost 320, but that's still a lot of ammo.

Anyone ever notice, you can reload your gun as many times as you like in any FPS but your character never stops to group all of your remaining bullets into a single magazine. What should happen (if we are to be realistic) is that you reload by ejecting the mag, put a fresh one in, and when you run out of fresh fully loaded mags you have a whole bunch of mags that are partially loaded left.

Reminded me of that Rooster Teeth Immersion.

Buying shit like that gets expensive fast unless you have tons of money to spare. Most people I know keep a dozen mags on hand and just stockpile boxes of ammo. There's very few domestic situations you could potentially encounter that would require reloading that often
