Hi FJ.
I'm a senior in highschool, and a complete band geek. I've participated in marching, steel drum, jazz, and concert band, and am in the wind ensemble, and throughout all my highschool years, our band director, Mr. Schrader, has always been the best teacher to ever live. Every student adores him. Well, today after we were done practicing, he told us to come sit down. I thought he was going to talk to us about this new piece we just got. I was wrong. Last year he had two heart attacks, and his health hasn't been the same. He manages all the band activities in my high school and, since the elementary doesn't have a band teacher, does some stuff down there, too. Basically he told us that it's gotten to be too much. He says he can't make it doing this another fifteen years. He's going to a new school 90 miles away for a less demanding job. I don't know if any of you had a teacher you treated almost like a parent, but we did. Everybody was crying, Schrader included. He leaves in 2 weeks. How can we give him the best farewell party ever? This man, there are no words to describe him. We're one of the best high school bands in the state because of him. He's the funniest, most talented, amazing guy ever. Help me find a way to make him never forget us. Gift ideas, party ideas, anything. We have 2 weeks to show him how much we love him. Sorry if this was too long.

I'm not 100% sure, but it has to be something that all of the students are involved in

It's worse because in two months we're going to Disney to march. I've never been there. I wanted to hang with him on the bus. Now we'll have to take a 22 hour bus trip with some student teacher we had before that'll probably be taking over for him. I know they'll mean well. I don't care if they gave us fucking Bach and Mozart to replace him, that man made us, even if he said it was all our work. Godammit.

What the anon below you said is pretty tangilbe, give the man a personalized party, and most importantly:

A swan song.

Make it a surpise, play off a last song he loved as a band, if possible. Have all the usual stuff for a party, but here's the most important part:

Make it a farewell party for HIM. If all the students sneak in beer, get drunk, and start fucking all over the place, everyone will be having fun but it won't be a farewell for him. Have a slideshow or video ready to honor him.

If possible, find some sort of token of appreciation that is tangible to give him.
