When the bomb fell on Hiroshima Japan had already agreed to the surrender, but due to miscommunications the bomb was dropped anyway. Again on Nagasaki the Japanese had pleaded with you to stop, they surrendered. You dropped the bomb anyways. (PS: there are lots of events where America has done something like this)

Japan was gonna fight until there was no one left to fight at all. It was either nuke them into surrendering, killing a few hundred thousand people. Or the alternative, an invasion of the Japanese mainland. The estimates were at least 2 million American casualties, and many times more for the Japanese.
