I agree, but you have to understand that many of our modern laws are based on morals founded by religion. There's a strong connection between the law and religion, which is why many religious advocates have a voice in lawmaking. I think it's more accurate to say that religion shouldn't have a place is lawmaking, rather than that it has no place.

The idea of guaranteeing the same rights to every citizen is not socialist...

no one's questioning your sacrifices or service, but it's not exactly the right thing to hide behind them as a bulletproof shield for saying whatever you want and not accepting criticism.

you've gone through the unimaginable for the ideals and people of this country, assholes or otherwise; that's what you do, and there should be more who strive for that

but some of those people (not necessarily gay rights here) who are suffering/treated unfairly/etc and are striving for reform. reform is a healthy part of any society, and shouldn't be outright rejected. without fighting for what people believe in, there'd still be racial segregation and no suffrage for women. you don't think there were guys who said 'go back to Africa where the blacks can drink from the good fountains, stop bitching about America'?
