To be honest, this comic does a shit job showing what transport proteins do. They're responsible for cell mediated diffusion. There are channel proteins and carrier proteins. The channel proteins are essentially tubes that allow large particles to pass through the cell membrane and the carrier proteins close around specific particles outside of the cell and then open inside the cell. They don't let you phase through shit :|
