I bought games like Portal 2, HL2, LFD2, the GTA series, Fallout NV, skyrim, Limbo, and a couple of others because i like to support the makers, and encourage them to make more awesome games. I pirated MWF3 and BF3 because i could give less than a shit about the studio.
So when you buy, you support the studio and all the people who put work into the game.
When you don't buy, nothing happens.
I like to think of it as a donation.

The Avengers, while being a brilliant movie, has in the near month it's been out brought in OVER two BILLION dollars of revenue.
I am confused how the movie industry is hurting.

I buy things if I know they're worth the money. Simple as that. My Steam games list is massive, because I want to support all the developers who have put hard work in to making something properly special. Hell, I always donate above average on the humble bundles, too.
On the other hand, I pirate for one of two things. 1, to try before I buy, or 2, to use it regardless due to my distrust of the company involved. For example, I downloaded The Witcher 2, played for a bit, loved it, bought it to support the developer. Then, Activision release another half-assed game that's barely worth a quarter of the price, and I just play the majority of it for a few hours and get rid of it. I wouldn't have bought it anyway.

One does not simply make a pirate-related post without putting Captain Jack Sparrow in it.
