yeah, just got all the death note black editions, so much better to feel an actual book in your hand than to have an e-reader

I enjoy books but my tablet lasts at least a week (up to 3 if left untouched) I thought it was crazy too but it is nice.

The way i see it, if ever there was a nuclear holocaust or if we ever ran out of elecrecity for god know what reason, with e-books we are more or less fucked, we couldn't learn how to build or rebuild as all the manuals are on e-books, which no longer work and so we could end up throwing away decades of technological, cultural and scientific advancement all from the use of e-books, a normal book on the otherhand, doesn't need electricity

Think about it, big explosions everywhere, and paper is flammable.

But some books would still survive,maybe a few and that few can be rewritten and reprinted after order is restored, with an e-book, nearly all of them would become non-functional after they run out of juice unless you could find a way to create more electricity, which wouldn't be too hard to do in a short term temporary solution eg electrical generators which run on fuel but in the long term you would need expertise to create enough electricity to run ebooks, that sort of engineering comes from information, easily accessible via normal books and manuals which don't require all this electrical generator mumbo jumbo and just needs to be in good enough nick to be legible. all together in this sort of scenario where resources are precious and fuel would most likely be a source of conflict and violence between survivors, a humble book far exceeds the e-book in terms of accessibility and reproducability. Althhough we can argue that some areas of the world may have electricity to run e-books even after end world but the majority of the world won't, and if the majority of the world has books then theres a chance that a large quantity will survive, anough for reprint anyway and therefore the rebuild.

Plus haven't you played fallout? all the books were useless lolz, and computers were fine.

You can charge an ebook with the sun, water or air power.

**doggstar rolled a random image posted in comment #82 at Wat ** just use an old car that works to charge an e book. use e book to read up on how to make a generator much like the first one created with those flap thingies and copper coils. attach to a bicycle and peddle to create electricity for your domain after a while you might want to think of creating a few capacitors as well and even making a steam powered motor instead of the bicycle.. create more and sell for items like food and water..dont make the items too reliable. only allow them to last a few months without repair and sell your services fixing them for more food and water

I own a book, which I have taken to so many places. It's my favorite book I never get bored of it (Generation Kill is the title btw). And it might sound weird but I LOVE the smell it has. It's about 2 years old and the pages are wrinkly and yellow'ish. But it smells sooooo awesome. Can't really describe it.
TL;DR: I like the smell of old books.

I was talking more about the practicality of it.
I'd rather have more space to pack for other things, than having to take up a large portion of my bag with books.

Yeah, same here, to be honest.
I only use mine for travelling, as I tend to pack a lot of stuff and can get through a lot of books very quickly.
I mean, I read the whole of Karl Marx's book while waiting for a plane.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It doesn't work for everything.

For a website that often supports practically over tradition, it's obnoxious so many would be upset over books moving to ereaders. I'm actually a writer too, an award-winning one at that (small local contest, but whatever) and one who's published a lot of fiction and nonfiction electronically, and let me tell you, if not for this new medium the entire literary field would be a lot less accessible to new authors. Self-publishing through Kindle in particular is the equivalent of being an aspiring movie maker on YouTube. It's where unknown talents who rather not spend $75 entering a contest with thousands of other writers, all of whom will lose barring the few who already have a reputation in the field, get a chance to display their work and advertise it as a writer, but without the costs of self-publication through print or getting rejected by a traditional publisher.

You know what else? I have the Kindle app on my computer and it's actually a fuck ton more comfortable than lying around reading a book. After spending years and years hunched over a desk playing on my computer, it's actually my most comfortable position to read. While sometimes you find that sweet spot laying around reading a book, other times I just get frustrated trying to get comfortable.

Oh, and ereaders and ereading apps also have tons of other useful features: highlighting without having to fumble with pencils and pens; looking up words instantly instead of circling them and hoping you'll remember to check later; being able to print the work or select pages if you really need it on-the-go and you can't take your computer; and it's just generally better to be at your computer. When the book makes an allusion to something, you can look it up right there on your computer. It's just a more efficient way to fully emerge in the information the author's presenting and as an author, I'd actually appreciate that.

In conclusion, guys, don't be hipsters.

I can see your points, and it makes sense, but I'd rather put up a preview online rather than a whole book. I figure making a TVTropes page might boost my chances at being spotted, too.

Opinionated? Being opinionated doesn't have to mean having a hard-headed inclination toward one option over another for irrational reasons. There's such a thing as being objectively opinionated, and enjoying things in print over ereaders just for the sake of tradition isn't objective.
