I just saw it for the first time a couple days ago, and I'm still wondering why people would start watching some guy beat the shit out of himself and then join his club.

I still don't get that part. Why aren't his brains all over the floor?

In order to get rid of Bad Tyler he intended to kill himself willingly, in his mind when he pulled the trigger he actually thought he was going to kill himself. When he did Tyler (imaginary one) thought he killed himself and died, when in reality he missed and the bullet went through his neck missing the vital stuff, almost impossible but stuff like that happens.
