Interestingly, the book "The Wizard of Oz" is actually about the monetary struggles of Americans in the late 1800s. The scarecrow represented the farmers who suffered from the lack of money circulating and who were thought to be ignorant of the cause, the tin man represented the skilled workman who was forced to work in a factory (losing his heart, his craft) and the lion represented William Jennings Bryan, a champion for money produced by the government. Finally, the slippers were supposed to be silver, not ruby (the movie makers wanted to show off their technicolor) and that represented keeping silver as a form of currency backing, not just gold. And lastly the road to Oz was to DC... showing the common man's trek to keep money produced by our government, not private banks.
TL;DR? the movie was about $$$ in the 1800s. Look it up.
