They say "If you press the button, someone you don't know will die."
and in the end woman asks "What now" and she is answered "Now we give it to someone else. SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW.
While not stated outright, that was pretty much the point of the story.

I think the point of the story was like the myths of old.
it was designed to give people a moral guidance.
this one in particular, being the whole 'dont be greedy' thing.
you press the button, your life gets fucked up. but you get a million dollars.
the point wasnt 'we give it to someone else who presses it and kills you'(is that the point you are trying to make? sorry if it isnt. thats just how its coming out.)

I am mistaking it with the Twilight Zone Episode. In episode its clearly stated that you will die.
In the story, they kill her husband. And ask her "You think you REALLY knew him?"
So if you are spamming the button, you are killing everyone you love.
Unless you are a complete sociopath, that's pretty horrifying.
