in the original story it was that if you press the button then someone you don't know will die and you get a million dollars.

The husband and wife didn't get along very well, and when she pressed the button he ended up getting killed some way. When she asked the man with the box why her husband died he simply replied "My dear, do you really think you knew your husband"
