Socialism has nothing to do with government, it just means workers' control of the means of production (as opposed to private control)...
State socialism is really a contradiction in terms, since if everything is controlled by the state, then there can't possibly be any workers' control.
Libertarian socialism, on the other hand, is really the only kind of socialism that can exist without contradicting itself, as well as being the only kind of libertarianism that can exist (since capitalism is by definition an authoritarian system, with a worker/boss hierarchy).

I think he meant that he's ideology was socialism, that he did think ''survival of the fittest'' is the best. He wanted a huge religious community where people helped each other.
