Not to be "that guy," but...
1. It's "yin" not "ying"
2. "Yin" represents shadows, femininity, and coolness, thus should be represented by black.
"Yang" represents light, masculinity, and warmth, thus should be represented by white.

I prefer the theory of the balance of Yin and Yang to combat evil (not sure of the word for it). In absolute basic-ness, it would be the Good and the Bad (not necessarily evil) staying in balance in order to prevent Chaos from happening. A perfect balance keeps the world from crumbling.

Just my opinion and theory here.

The humor is that this pic has come from Russian internets. These three elements are named "Инь, Янь, Хрень" on the original picture (actually, should have been named "Инь, Ян, Хрень", but it's a common mistake)
