Well I don't think we can use winter as an excuse. Since the russians also have a pretty intense winter.

Invading a cold country, even if you're from a cold country is not easy. The people defending have a huge advantage, it's their home, they have warm places to live. The invaders don't have homes, a lot of them are stuck in makeshift tents for months. It doesn't matter what country you come from, it's not an easy thing to do. If the sides were switched and Finland was invading Russia, they'll run into the same problems.

...because Finland totally took part in the first WW. And actually Russia did fight in the World War I before the revolution.

I find it hard to belive that the russians were not prepared for a winter war, , they know better than anyone how hard it is to fight a war during the winter.
The russian tanks were also among the best tanks for tundra/winter warfare during that time.

The Soviets moved massive amounts of troops from the southern provinces of the USSR, thus they didn't have proper winter gear. They lost countless of men due to the harsh climate, inproper equipment, bad tactics and overconfidence. They said that they could conquer Finland within a week. That did not happen.

I see, it makes more sense if it was recruits from southern Soviet. And it is true indeed that the Soviet army was poorly equipped, during the war against Germany half of them didn't even get a gun.

I'm curious, how you you use a gun effectively with thick mittens?

well, it's a PPD-40 submachine gun. It's a spray-and-pray weapon with an effective range of about 100 yards, so precision won't be a problem.
The controls on it are also fairly large, and easy to access, the magazine release, safety lever, and cocking handle are all large and easy to operate.
The problem would be the trigger. getting your finger inside the trigger guard while wearing fingerless mittens might be a problem.
But I'm pretty sure that you can just unscrew the trigger guard and remove it on a PPD-40 without effecting the function of the gun, so it wouldn't really be a problem.
