The continents of North and South America make up the entity of "America" for that reason, Aztecs and Mayans are both considered Native American tribes.

Your view of what "Native Americans" are is the nativist (ie. Racist) way of looking at it, popularized in the early 20th century. Technically speaking, the word Native American doesn't mean ANYTHING, because the natives of the Americas never actually used the word America.

If you actually think that Native South Americans wouldn't be considered Native Americans, then I have a very sad story for you. The name America is often thought to have originated from Amerigo Vespucci's name. Amerigo Vespucci never went to North America, he only visited South America (specifically near the Amazon). This would mean that the Natives of (South) America would have, at their first discovery, been called NATIVE AMERICANS. They wouldn't be called Native South Americans because North America wasn't discovered (recorded) until 200 years later.

Also, I understand that you have never learned to use critical thinking, or derive information from text, so I will make it clear: The word is not subjective, the word is region dependent. (if you are in America, you call long pieces of fried potato "fries", but if you are in England, you call them "chips". You however, cannot do it the opposite way around, at the risk of having your meaning misconstrued)

Also, the word Native American is NOT variable. It has a concise meaning that you can derive from the name. That's right, Native Americans are natives of America.

Now, if you think that America is a single continent; then congratulations, there's your answer.

And, if you think that South America and North America are two different continents, it would be logical that natives would be separated by being Native North Americans and Native South Americans. Further logic would dictate that the word "Americas" is a plural of the two Americas, and therefore the two continents would STILL be classified as the Americas.

And if so, no. That question is stupid. Connotation is often dependent on whom you are speaking to.

Generally, if you are speaking to somebody who is uneducated and says things like "America is one continent, unless we're referring to the people, in which case, it is two continents" then yes, they will say that Native Americans are specific to North America (and will also babble like an idiot when you ask them to explain what South American Natives are called)

The word Native Americans has ALWAYS referred to Natives of NORTH and SOUTH America. It wasn't until the 1930s, when a group of people known as "nativists" decided that they wanted all Blacks, Asians and Mexicans to be thrown out of the country. To accomplish this, they stated that the only people Native to America (Native Americans) were people who had been born in the United States. Later, they amended this statement to disallow even more minorities by limiting this to "them pesky injuns and WASPs".
