Yeah he does plan on returning to it, but there will be no more Eragon. They will probably not even acknowledge his existence or you'll never see/hear what he is doing. It will be all about the world after Gal is gone. I believe he said he's not going to explain any thing about the Witch either, as that would make her lose her charm.

There is no way you could continue the series, even if it is not centred around Eragon, without mentioning him. He was the first new rider, He killed galbatorix and founded the new order of the Riders. Any story concerning future riders would at least mention him, if not include him in the story because Riders have incredibly long lives.

True enough, they will mention him, but he will not be included in the main lore. He won't be a major influence or leader, or anything, except for maybe something for new riders to stride for or if the story focuses on Arya then it might make him what she remembers in order to keep going in her long tiresome life as the new Queen.
Or if they deliver a Heart of Hearts, that may cause him to get mentioned as he's the one protecting them. But the author, from what I recall, plainly said that Eragon is done.
