I can forgive him for that, given that the word meme has supplanted the word macro, which is what these actually are.

yeah that is also true...real memes are Numa Numa, Chocolate rain, longcat and the like.

Not so, a meme is a unit of cultural information communicated through a macro.

As an example the sentence I just typed could be considered a macro (a loose adaptation of a loose adaptation but still) and the understanding of what a meme is would be the internal meme inherent to the macro.

Macros communicate Memes because of shared culture between participants, it's the very essence of language.
