Well it can be distinguished as a very different dialect from England's English. So I think people just call it American because no official name has been giving. Much like the different dialects of Mexico and Spain. While they are both called Spanish, they are two different dialects. I hope that clears up as to why people call it American

By that reasoning then WE MUST GO DEEPER! Within Spanish you also have the Catalonian way of speaking Spanish and also the Basque way of speaking Spanish. What about certain words within countries, such as in Britain where Yorkshire has a load of different words to say Cornwall. Half the time I don't even know what people from Yorkshire are saying.
I am aware, I was simply proposing an answer as to why people keep calling American a language. I never said it was a real language. I do, however, believe that our English Dialects are rapidly moving apart from each other.
Well I was proposing the idea that because our dialects are moving father apart, that each dialect almost becomes a different language. While I could go to England and understand what they are saying, I feel as though somethings wouldn't fit or make sense to me. That's all.
