My theory is that Amon might be Ty Lee's son or grandson or a possible student of hers. In The Last Airbender Ty Lee was able to block chi at the highest level of all the others, making her the master in this field. 70 years later and a lot more experience, she's either dead or an old baba by now.

It kind looks like Bumi. He's got the same eyebrows and wrinkle on this forehead. And don't tell me "It can't be Bumi. He's not dark skinned in the flashback." Sokka isn't dark skinned either. And it does explain why Sokka, Aang, and Toph seem depressed in the flash back.
