Not in western style ^^ Since we are western dudes, we say Ping Fa, just as John Smith etc...

But we are not ^^ we break their tradition and call them by their first names first.

That argument is about as rational as a cat wanting a cheeseburger.

The structure of the names in china and the western world are very alike. We have a first name, a personal appointed name to which we respond to as "my name". We also have a family name, a surname if you will. We dont use it as an idividual name but rather an informal form of our first names. We always write the first name first and end with the family name.

In china they usually paid much more respect to fellow humans and used their family name for the individuals. This is also observed in some western cases. However, the chinese also appoint personal names to all children but still write, and say, the family name first, to make it easier to know which family they belonged to.

The problem which I try to describe is that in China, I would clearly agree that her name is Fa Mulan. Here, were I assume both you and me sit, we would call her Mulan Fa, just as we say John Smith and not the other way around.

If John Smith (being a western born and raised man) went to China he would intruduce himself as Smith John since he would naturally adapt to their traditions, the same goes for Mulan in my opinion.

Your example is actually quite valid. Another (perhaps more realistic) scenario are the native americans who usually gave white people names that they felt more comfortable with (in your case Anal Bead for me). This is something that is either accepted or the individual will have to clearly point out that the name that is given by the "others" are incorrect / not desirable / yada yada.

My point being, we have not changed Mulans name at all, her made up first name is still Ping and her family name is still Fa, we just turn the order because we have a western name system.

TL:DR

The name is the same, we just say it in another order.
