Actually, you can drown a fish; one can do so by simply dragging the fish backwards.

If the fish are in a pool of a fluid that is denser than water and doesn't meet their oxygen requirements or their gills can't process it, that makes plenty of sense. Being that this occurs plenty often in nature, logic remains not fucked.
