The truth can be very demoralizing and pointing out everyone's flaws, especially if they are accurate, can damage a persons self-esteem severely.
To be honest is great but it doesn't mean the truth in everything needs to be pointed out, people need to discover it themselves and you can guide them with that by telling them certian truths but you can't tell them how to live their life (well you can but that makes you an asshole).

Just because a truth needs to be said does not mean it needs to be heard.

There are people that will always tell the truth and they are amazing people, but amazing people can also be jerks. Always being honest does not make you a good friend, but being honest in the right moments and telling the right lies can make amazing people extraordinary friends.

Yes, the truth is largely a good thing, but there are times when it's not necessary, or downright harmful.

A wise man once said "never tell me the odds", because sometimes, telling the odds demoralizes the person they are told to so much that it actually causes them to fail.

Think of the following situation: Someone, not your "friend" per se, but a casual acquaintance, tells absolutely horrible jokes. I mean HORRIBLE. Do you give them a smile and move the conversation elsewhere, or do you tell them that their jokes make you want to slit your own throat so you never have to hear another one?

It's not completely black and white. I mean, obviously it's better to tell your friend if you broke their Batman CD, or if you think they have a drinking problem, but think about the following situation:

Your friend/acquaintance tells bad jokes. Like, really bad, boring jokes. Do you just live with it, and give them a smile when they make one of their feeble attempts at comedy, or do you stop them mid-joke and go; "stop. Please. You make horrible jokes. Absolutely horrible. Until you've been to a coach, don't make more jokes".

Guilt is one of the things keeping me from doing bad stuff. That and the consequences of my actions.

I agree, guilt in short doses is good, but some people carry guilt for years, it isn't healthy
