What did America owe them? If you are referring to the revolutionary war where France didn't aid until near the end once they were sure we could do it and only because it would be limiting the power of their greatest advisary, you are wrong.

France used troops from North Africa and Indochina so I ask for you to rebuke your previous statement.

You make yourself look stupid for calling me a dumbass when you clearly stated WW2 in your earlier statement when North African troops fought in WW1 and yes please research more before thinking your a genius (I saw the history teacher thing in one of you other posts also) because Indian and Vietnamese (Indochina) troops fought for France.

During WW2, the french were beat out of those areas by the japanese. The U.S. asked for the support of Ho Chi minh to fight the japanese for the war effort, promising independance for his country, unfortunately the U.S. didn't realize he would make it a communist country, so they put France back in control of the area.

The French and the Vietnamese (mainly) then fought each other from WW2's end to the battle of Dien Bein Phu, where a large french army was routed. This was the end of the French/Vietnamese conflict. After this battle, the countries of N. Vietnam, S. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos were established.

I remember learning that the reason the French government surrendered in WW2 was because of fear for the suffering of the civilian population. In fact, the government was split into two camps. On the one side, you had the military wanting to move the government to one of the French colonies and continue the war from there. On the other side the civilian governent felt that it couldn't abandon its civilian population to the Germans (and possibaly German reprisal). Ultimately it came down to German demands. The French government decided that if the Germans demanded the abdication of the French colonies, or French Navy, they would continue the war from abroad. The Germans, however, did not make such demands, and so the French government surrendered.

It was also hypothesized by Hew Strachan that De Gaulle, a combatant in the First World War, was so traumatized by combat (De Gaulle fought at Verdun, one of the bloodiest battles in human history) that the idea of more slaughter influenced his decision in the Second World War (honestly, look up The Battle Of Verdun; It really was a fuck fest in terms of human suffering).

This is not true at all America has been a "powerful" nation since the tail end of the 19th century. And the person saying that the UK were masters of the seas were sorely mistaken because Japan's fleet could have decimated the British. America became and has held naval superiority of the world since the 1940's when our industrial powerhouse kicked in on the manufacture of ships much the same way we have held air dominance for the past 30 years.

No, dude, he's right. The United States military was so underprepared by the outbreak of WW2 the the general sentiment in the U.S. was that defeat might have been inevitable. In fact, it's only towards the end of the Second World War that the United States became a superpower. You see, by the time the United States entered WW2 we were still using old WW1 tactics, equipment, and even uniforms. The fact that the United States was able to "modernise" so quickly became a matter of pride here in the U.S. Was America a major mover in the world before WW2? Yes. Was the United States the superpower it became post WW2 (Late 1940's-present)? No. You see WW2 really made modern America (in terms of military might). Also, don't forget, the Second World War solidified the soul of America. What America felt itself to represent (hard work, do or die attitude, preserving freedom/human rights) was established in WW2. Whether or not history can actually back that up is a different matter; the fact is, the United States truly believed that at the end of WW2. This is why you always see WW2 documentaries on the History Channel, or the Military Channel.
