If you think about it this does make sense. The grooves in the tiles would be where the water would flow into and stay. Therefore the roots would grow to where the water is because of hydrophilic auxins(kind of like hormones) stimulate grow and elongation of cell walls and cause the roots to grow towards the water. This looks awesome but it does make sense if you think about it

It's because roots are constantly looking for water. The cracks/spaces in between the brick is where grass and weeds grow, which produces moisture such as dew in the morning.

Pavers have space between them becasue, well they are pavers. A paver is just laid on top of cement or base sand and then they drop play sand over them.

Over time pavers shift if the border is done right or if they are being pushed by something, lets say roots?

Sidewalks have spaces in-between them for when the concrete expands/shrinks due to temperature!
