what's the difference between an israeli and an israelite? about 100 calories
It became a race when they were all running to get away from the germans.
It's not a race. it's an ethnicity that dates back to the Phoenicians, which were darker toned/desertish people.
Well, you can't really examine Judaism in the same way you can with Christianity or Islam. Most religions that we are most familiar with are missionary religions, meaning that they seek new converts to the faith, e.g. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, etc. However, unlike these faiths, Judaism is a religion that's tied to a specific people. The Jews are, in their eyes, God's chosen people, and the idea that gentiles should be converted to a Judaic faith was part of what Jesus taught, and therefore never spread to mainstream Judaism. Thus, being God's chosen, their faith remained a primarily regional faith, and thus was mostly tied to a specific ethnicity.
Think of it this way--how many white Hindus do you know?

Well, you see. Jews have always been seen as an ethnicity due to the original spread of the religion foremost being the Near East. When those people ventured into other areas of the world, they were seen as a Jewish ethnicity. It's the same as when people look at an Arab nowadays and say "Hey look, a muslim".
There's nothing strange about it, honestly.

It's always been an ethnic group, and it never stopped being a religion.
Judaism originated in Judea and was first practiced by the ancient Hebrews. The descendents of these Hebrews are called Jews, regardless of whether or not they believe in the Jewish religion. Because Judaism (unlike Islam or Christianity) has never gone out of its way to win converts, the religion remains mostly confined to the Jewish ethnic group.
Furthermore, Jews have historically stuck together and have discouraged marriage to Gentiles. This was necessary in order to preserve their culture, religion, and ethnic identity, as they've been persecuted by other groups since the Diaspora up until the Holocaust, and in many places up to modern day.
The effect of this is that most religious Jews are ethnic Jews and vice-versa.
tl;dr "Jew" is both an ethnic group and a religion.
