Hanged is the passive meaning of the word (someone who hung himself). Hung is the active meaning of the word (someone who hung something). So OP was correct.

No, actually OP was correct. "Hanged" is used specifically to describe a person being hung by the neck with the intention of killing them. "Hung" is used in all other past tenses of hang. Go look it up.
