Middle one rotates in different directions depending on which of the outside ones you are looking at.

it's gray. when you see the line, your brain assumes there's an angle facing towards you, making you believe you are looking at a box. the shadow on the ground pointing towards you makes you think that there is a light source either directly above or slightly in front of you. either way, the light source would naturally light the top of the "box" more than the side in the shadow (the one facing you.) the horrizon matching the angle line helps the illusion by suggesting that the box is facing your completely. by believing that the bottom half is shaded, you automatically compensate for this shadow by imagining to be lighter than it is. since both the sides are the same color, you think the bottom half is lighter.

when you cover the line with your finger, you remove the angle, and your brain no longer needs to believe that the bottom half is in shadow, allowing you to compare the colors as they truly are.

IF YOU DIDN'T WANT TO READ ALL THAT **** , HERE'S A SIMPLE VERSION:

"reflective 3D image", garrettjacobsen? are you ******* retarded? you can't make a part of your computer screen reflective, ******* . it's ******* pixels, not a magic-box.

you want proof? cover the line by holding your finger in front of your eyes rather than the screen. your finger ain't shadowing **** , but the effect still happens. "you create a shadow" on an LCD screen? you're a ******* retard.

its because your finger covers the only white part of the image.

It's a shading trick... nice try though.
