Ask a Satanist anything

Okay guys, time for a quick brush up.

That symbol (The inverted star) is used as the insignia for the left hand path of Paganism, and it has a bunch of meaningless Hebrew letters around it. This symbol is used as the insignia for the LaVeyan Church of Satan (www.churchofsatan.com/) which is a religion started by Anton LaVey in the 50s.

The LaVeyan church believes that man is his own god, and that he can gain hedonistic pleasures (women, power, money, etc.) by manipulating those around him. They do this through a series of Minor and Major rituals designed to frighten others and get them to do what they want, or make them feel like the Satanist in question actually has "supernatural powers". THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN A DEITY, and I cannot stress that enough. They use Satan simply as a symbol of hedonistic pleasure.

On the other hand, there are some Christians and others of Abrahamic religions who actually worship the figure known as Satan. This is mostly done to gain attention and to stand out from the crowd. There is no established Church or organized religion for the literal worship of Satan in this day and age.

I'll take this opportunity to clear up some other misconceptions:

The upside-down cross is not a Satanic symbol, it is the Cross of St. Peter. St. Peter was a disciple of Jesus who was going to be crucified and asked to be crucified upside-down because he did not feel he waqs worthy to be killed in the same way as Jesus. It is a sign of humbleness.

The upright star is a symbol of the right hand path of Paganism, (white magic, good things, blessings, etc.) It is certainly not a Satanic symbol.

Paganism is a weird thing. There were ancient Pagans, but they did not at all practice what happens today. Modern paganism and all it's beliefs came about in the 1700s. (www.cracked.com/article_18510_6-supposedly-ancient-traditions-that-totally-arent_p2.html)
