Only thing I can think of when seeing that picture.

I'm not certain as to why our country has it set up that way, but my theory is that the number in the month part only can be 1-12, and no more than that, while the number in the days slot can be anywhere from 1 to 31, which is slightly more. In the year slot, it can be from 00 to 99, which is quite a bit more. That's the only thing I can think of to support the US reasoning, though.

It's the lazy american government that adopted that insane troll system and won't change to metrics. I'm a scientist (An ameture one for now, but who cares) and I'm completely familiar with both. As far as the date system goes, everyone's being a little lazy there. How about we use the full names of the months?
