Just though I'd put this out there (I'm not trying to convert you or shit)
But the main reason I believe Jesus was the son of god was because people like John the Baptist (quite a smart man) were killed in the most horrible ways (one was crucified upside-down, another got skinned alive bit by bit) Because they truly believed Jesus was son of god, the had seen him, and they knew it, and believed it so much, they didn't avoid a gory death by saying the simple words "I was lying", they believed in what they saw.
Thought I'd put that out there.

yes this is true according to the gospels of peter, james, john, etc. Not trying to convert you or anything, just putting this out there. The gospels of jesus were written decades after he died. this seriously puts into question whether or not the gospels of jesus are accurate, which is unlikely because the 4 gospels contradict each other, and have details exclusive to themselves, i.e. the nativity story is in only one of the gospels and not in the rest. It is hard to believe any of it has any truth, the whole thing could have been made up. That being said the context of jesus' teachings make sense when take into account of the roman occupation. For example, turn the other cheek is talking about when roman soldiers would slap a jew just for fun, or whatever made up excuse they could think of, and because a backhand was illegal, if a jew turned the other cheek after he was slapped by a roman, then the roman might backhand him, which was illegal. You can believe that jesus was the son of god if you like, but you cant just take the bibles word for for it, because the bible is mostly fiction

I'm actually studying the gospels right now, and I can tell you that the first part is not true.
For one, the Nativity story is in both the Matthew and Luke Gospels.
The "newest" gospel, the gospel of John, was written max. 50 years after Jesus died, and John used figurative type of writing in telling Jesus' stories. However, the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke were all written 30-40 years after Jesus' death, and were all written with eyewitness accounts.
About the bible being fiction, you have to realize that Catholics read the Bible contextually, in a way were if you read the Old Testament you're going to be like "That's Bullshit." but then read the New Testament, and you'll realize the Old Testament is part of the "Fuller Sense", the fulfillment of God's covenant as Jesus. The Bible is not a source of Historical or Scientific truth, but a source of Religious truth.
You see, I wouldn't have a problem with people ranting against religion, but it's just that most of those people have absolutely no idea about the actual religion, and those that actually did read the bible, read it literally.

P.S: the "Just putting that out there" was because I left the reply open for a while and when I came back I wrote that so you didn't say "Stop cramming your beliefs down my throat."

thank you for replying, and while you did correct me in the fact that the nativity story is said in both matthew and luke, something i did not know, it still stands to the fact that mark and john do not have it, and my point still stands that the 4 gospels have stories that are exclusive to themselves, and they also have stories that contradict one another. Another point that I would like to point out is that while eye witness testimony may seem credible to some, it also has a noteriety for being unreliable. I can agree with you on the point that the bible's main purpose is for religious fullfillment and personal belief and I respect you for keeping at that. I have read the bible cover to cover (although not recently I must admit) so I have a fair amount of knowledge concerning the various stories and fables. And also with the old testament, uhm the old testament is all bullshit, and the new testament really doesnt help its case.
ps. I appreciate that this discussion hasn't degenerated into a flamed arguement, and I would love to continue to have intelligent conversation with you, because it is rare to have such a volley of words with people on the internet.
