And Madoka Magica is a show that completely surprised the shit out of everyone who watched it at episode 3 and made them shit houses of bricks, and many anime reviewers put it at the top of their list for 2011 anime...

Generally I go for more true-to-life shows. Or at least shows that present their ridiculousness in a believable way (Evangelion, Durarara), or in a hilarious way (FLCL).

Bakurano has a similar concept to Evangelion, except with a few key differences. The major ones are that the humans only have one mech, and each time someone successfully pilots it, they die shortly afterwards. Essentially, everyone dies. It's one of the most depressing animes in existence.

Ano Hana is a bittersweet as hell anime about a bunch of people who were good friends as kids, something happened, they drifted away, then shit goes down and they all have to be together. I had no idea what I was feeling at the end of it...

Well, the plot in FMA: Brotherhood diverges from the original anime pretty early on, so it's not much of a loss if you skipped to the end of the worse series.
