He stands completely motionless, not even a flinch. Doesn't even get into a ready stance, nothing. Just stares blankly at him.

But to be honest, chewbacca's appearance in episode 3 seemed hastily written in there. His presence seemed like george lucas just wanted to throw as much stuff from the original series into the prequels as possible.
