I liked the original idea of democracy,
The fuck happened since then?

One: The USA is not a democracy.

Two: Democracy by definition is where the people all vote on every single proposition in government. That would suck. Why? Well let's see... Oh! Look there was a new budget proposition proposed in the senate today. EVERY SINGLE CITIZEN NOW HAS TO VOTE ON IT BECAUSE THIS IS A DEMOCRACY IN SOME ALTERNATE UNIVERSE.

And here we get to directly and indirectly democracy. What you are describing is a directly democracy, where everyone would vote on everything.

However, most countries are indirectly democracies these days, so instead of voting on everything, we choose leaders whose job is to vote for us.

This is middle school stuff, dude.

We are a representative democracy. The original idea of democracy is not doable with this large of a population. We elect officials with the same ideas to recreate a more personal democracy. In the original US they had town hall meetings for what they could do, but it was their leaders that signed the constitution. It was not all the inhabitants of the US

i always thought that too. always thought it was a republic cause we have officials. And a true democracy is something like a townhall meeting where everyone has a vote, but i think i recall that we are a "representative democracy" as opposed to a true democracy. But we still are a democracy

That thing right there... The "America is the land of the free" part has always confused me. Please explain to me how America of all places is the land of the free.
User avatar #40 to #20 - jiggyjohns (02/25/2012) [-]
ill explain by saying, you can say that and know nothing bad can happen to you for saying it. That's freedom.

It's hard to see the freedom from the inside
