White people did start the "nigga" trend. But out of stupidity... Using the word "inmate" in the wrong context. inmate doesn't mean black people, and it never meant black people. inmate is a term to refer to someone who is dumb, slothful or lazy and ignorant. Slaves got called inmate or nigga when they got too tired to work anymore. Which is ironic, because the slave owners were too lazy to do the work themselves. They were, in fact, the inmates. But history doesn't remember them as such. At any rate, somehow that word has taken on a new meaning... people who are too ignorant to understand where the word comes from use it in that manner. Yes, black people who use the word in that way are stupid too if that's what you want to hear. But in truth, anyone can be a inmate or "inmateish" as some say. Use the word "nigga" wrong and well, sorry to say, it makes you one too.

Actually, the words originates from one of the first African tribes, Europeans encountered that called themselves Niger or Neger (probably something in between) meaning "men". Later Slavers started using it as a general term for slaves (usually black people).
I seriously don´t see what the big deal is supposed to be apart from Americans blowing everything out of proportion (as usual).
