It's actually a big book and they force tolkien to divide it in 3 smallers books. But LoTR is not a trilogy just a big book divide in 3 parts

I am well aware of that. "they" as you put it didn't force him to divide it. He realized how long it would be if he made it one book so he made it three.

Lord of the rings was actually released in parts, each book is made up of two smaller novels :)
