Why would you shine a light on a lcd screen?

What possible purpose could that fulfill?

Or is it supposed to illuminate the buttons (still wouldn´t make a lot of sense)?

Maybe that is a stupid question, but I don´t get it.

The LCD screen had no backlight, and the light used for the pixels wasn't very bright. this was just make you see the pixels.
